Chapter 723: Lightning wolves

As Max’s team pressed deeper into the heart of the Berserk Lightning Region, the atmosphere grew ever more oppressive, like the sky itself was slowly lowering to crush them beneath its weight.

The storm above roared with relentless fury, lashing the charred landscape in sheets of violet lightning and sending sparks sizzling over the blackened rocks. Even the very air seemed sharp, charged with so much static that each breath tasted metallic on the tongue.

Yet despite the thunder rolling overhead, the group moved cautiously but steadily, weaving around jagged pillars of stone and rivers of crackling energy. Their pace was tense but determined, each of them silently aware that any step could bring them face-to-face with death in this merciless land.

Then, all at once, Max froze in mid-step. His clothes bellowed as lightning flickered around him, his gaze growing distant and focused, as though looking at something none of the others could see.

“Everyone, be ready,” he said sharply, his voice cutting through the howling winds. “I see a pack of wolves coming toward us.”

Arlen and the others exchanged quick frowns, scanning the storm-lashed terrain with narrowed eyes. None of them could see anything. Not a shadow, not a shape, not even a flicker of movement through the sheets of rain and lightning.

Even their senses came up empty, washed away by the chaotic electrical currents flooding the region.

Lena tilted her head slightly. “Wolves? Are you sure, Max? I’m sensing nothing.”

Max didn’t even blink. “Trust me. They’re close.”

Though skeptical, the group didn’t dismiss him. Lyra’s repeated praises of Max’s unique abilities still echoed in their memories, and none of them wanted to risk being wrong in a place like this. Quietly, weapons were drawn as they prepared themselves.

Only a moment later, Max’s warning proved its worth. A surge of lightning split the ground ahead, revealing a pack of creatures surging forth from the swirling haze—sleek, feral shapes with fur bristling like iron needles, eyes glowing electric blue, and bodies wreathed in arcs of pure lightning.

“Lightning wolves!” Arlen shouted, his voice echoing against the rolling thunder. “They’re wolves birthed by the chaotic lightning in this region! Everyone, prepare for battle!”

The wolves, numbering at least twenty, advanced like a living storm front, fangs bared and lightning crackling from their jaws. Each step they took scorched the earth beneath them, leaving glowing paw prints of molten rock.

The beasts snarled and snapped, arcs of power leaping between their bodies, creating a terrifying web of lethal energy.

But thanks to Max’s warning, Arlen’s team wasn’t caught off guard. They were already in fighting stances, a semicircle formed instinctively around Max, weapons gleaming under the strobing lights of the tempest. Mana surged around them, blazing into shields and swirling into deadly strikes.

“Die!” Arlen roared, his voice thundering as fiercely as the lightning that tore through the clouds above. His body surged forward, wrapped in a violent halo of blue light, and he drove his fist, clad in spiked gauntlets, straight into the ribcage of a snarling lightning wolf.

There was a sickening crack of bone and a burst of electric sparks as the beast was hurled backward like a rag doll, skidding across the scorched ground in a streak of blazing arcs before it lay still, its fur sizzling as the last flickers of lightning died from its eyes.

Kael, who had been the quietest of them all until this moment, moved next with eerie calm, his movements almost silent even as chaos erupted around him. In one smooth, lethal motion, he unsheathed his sword and swung it in a wide horizontal arc, the blade flashing like a silver comet under the storm’s flickering glow.

Three lightning wolves lunged at him simultaneously, fangs bared and lightning crackling across their bodies, but before they could even touch him, their heads flew from their shoulders, cleanly severed, arcs of blue lightning spurting like blood from the wounds as their bodies crumpled to the ground.

Nearby, Lena stood poised with an almost serene expression, her eyes shining like twin sapphires. She lifted her arms, and slender streams of water materialized in the air around her, forming shimmering blades that swirled and danced like ribbons.

With a flick of her wrists, the water blades shot forward, slicing through the lightning wolves with frightening precision. Each wave of her hand cleaved flesh and bone effortlessly, as though the creatures were made of soft tofu, their bodies collapsing as sizzling chunks, steam rising where water met lightning.

Sana, whose dark hair whipped around her like a storm-tossed banner, grinned with savage delight as she leapt into the fray. A blood-red scythe materialized in her grip. She spun like a cyclone, her movements fluid yet terrifyingly precise.

With each swipe of her scythe, wolves were cleaved in half, their screeches drowned out by the howling wind and the crackle of severed lightning arcs. Sparks sprayed from every contact, painting the battlefield in a dance of crimson and electric blue.

Finally, Varek, towering over the rest with his massive frame, let out a booming shout as he hoisted his colossal axe high above his head.

With an earth-shaking roar, he brought the axe crashing down. The blade split the ground in a shower of stone and sparks, obliterating the last cluster of lightning wolves in a single, devastating blow. The beasts didn’t even have time to whimper before they were reduced to smoldering remains, their bodies split and seared by both steel and thunderous force.

And throughout all of this carnage, Max remained perfectly still, watching with intense, calculating eyes. His expression was unreadable, but his gaze flickered from one of his companions to the next. He had purposefully held back his own power.

In a world where trust was earned with blood and survival, he needed to know the true measure of those he would be forced to rely on. Their strength, their elemental affinities, their style of combat—all were pieces of a puzzle until now.

’Another?’ Just at that moment, Max sensed another wolf but bigger in size.
